Art-based activities contribute to children's psychological well-being and psychosocial development

At the 32nd Annual Sessions of the Jaffna Science Association, Dr. T. Thevananth delivered a presentation on the role of art activities in psychosocial work. The presentation focused on how art-based activities contribute to children's psychological well-being and psychosocial development, with particular emphasis on the “Saturday Drama Night” programme conducted by the Active Theatre Movement at Nallur.

The discussion was supported by several theoretical perspectives, including Sigmund Freud's theory of unconscious expression, Carl Jung's concept of symbolic expression, Erik Erikson's psychosocial development theory, and Lev Vygotsky's social learning theory. Through these frameworks, the presentation demonstrated how creative arts provide opportunities for emotional expression, identity formation, social interaction, confidence building, resilience, and psychological healing among children.
Based on practical experiences gained through the Saturday Drama Night programme conducted by the Active Theatre Movement at Nallur, the presentation highlighted the effectiveness of theatre and creative arts as psychosocial intervention tools. The programme provides opportunities for emotional expression, social interaction, identity development, confidence building, and psychological healing, thereby contributing significantly to the holistic development and well-being of children.

The seminar was chaired by Dr. Surenthirakumar, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Jaffna Science Association for providing this valuable opportunity to share our experiences and work in promoting children's psychosocial well-being through creative arts and theatre-based interventions. The event served as an important platform for knowledge sharing, academic dialogue, and strengthening collaboration among professionals committed to child development, mental health, and psychosocial care.
